The Ocean is Alive

I am the ocean. Always alive, always moving. I breathe with the tides, pulse with the moon, and hum with life from the deepest trenches to the sunlit shallows.

In my warm waters, near the equator, I shimmer with color. Coral reefs rise like cities, built slowly by tiny hands. Fish in brilliant blues and golds flit through the maze. Sea turtles glide over gardens of life, and dolphins twist through light. I carry clouds of plankton—small, glowing, vital—feeding whales, jellyfish, everything. These waters are my laughter, full and bright.

Farther from the sun, I cool. The reefs give way to kelp forests, swaying in rhythm with my breath. Otters play among the leaves, and orcas pass like shadows. I lift nutrients from below to feed life above. Birds dive, fish school, and silence is deep, but never empty.

In the coldest corners—Arctic and Antarctic—I slow, and my voice quiets. Ice drifts across my surface, cracking, singing. Below, life endures: narwhals, glowing jellies, tiny creatures you’ve never seen. Even where light never touches, I cradle strange beings in the pressure and dark. I give space for life where none should be.

I am proud to hold it all—to feed, shelter, and protect so many forms of life. My joy is in their survival, their beauty, their mystery.

But I feel the weight of harm. Plastic clogs my currents. Oil slicks my skin. Chemicals cloud my rivers. My reefs bleach in the warming. My fish flee to cooler places. The ice melts too quickly. My surface rises, not in rage, but because I can’t hold the heat.

Still, I want to keep giving. I ask only this: take gently. Give me quiet places to rest. Let life regrow. Keep your waste away. Choose kindness in every drop that flows to me.

I am not endless. But I am strong, if you let me be.

Your breath comes from mine. Your storms begin in me. We are not apart.

Let me live, and I will keep life alive.
